Discovery Interviews
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In a construction project, whether small or large, numerous members are involved, including the owner, project manager, vendors, architect, and engineer. A specific workflow is essential, so we conducted interviews with experienced users to understand the current workflow better. The setup process proved challenging, and users expressed frustration with the existing options.
During the interviews, we asked questions like "Can you tell me how to...?" and "What is your experience like when...?" I had the opportunity to attend these discovery interviews, which helped me gain a deeper understanding of the pain points, desires, wants, and needs of ProjectSight. The interviews were conducted via Google Meet, and each session was recorded. My role included taking notes and actively listening.
PROGRAMS USED
LAYING THE FOUNDATION
I started my internship at Trimble with very little knowledge about construction, knowing only that workers typically wear hard hats and orange vests. I didn't realize how complex the entire process was from start to finish. Working with ProjectSight felt like learning a new language, especially since many of my coworkers frequently used acronyms, which made things even more challenging. So, what did I do? I did my homework. I began writing down every acronym I encountered, and if I didn't know what it meant, I simply asked. I also started compiling a list of terms and defining them within the context of construction. I read blogs and articles on the topic and didn't hesitate to reach out to team members for clarification and insights.
SKETCHING THE MAPS
Alongside filling out a Discovery map, I also created an experience map. This visual tool helped us understand how the user completes specific tasks. I prefer using pen and paper for conceptualization, so I sketched out the experience map, narrating each step aloud to ensure it made sense. I also incorporated the user's comments from the interview into the map.
DISCOVERY INTERVIEW 1
The first interview was with a project manager who used a different version of Trimble's software. This conversation provided valuable insights into what aspects of the system were effective and where there were pain points. The project manager explained the options available to users and how they facilitated the necessary workflows, as well as the elements that caused frustration. During the interview, she demonstrated the application, guiding us through each step. Afterward, I reviewed the recording several times to translate her feedback into actionable insights for improving the user experience. The image is not of her, but it represents her role. I used Miro to create this discovery map.
DISCOVERY INTERVIEW 2
The second interview was with a Sales Engineer whose role was to sell ProjectSight to potential clients. As a subject matter expert (SME), she was clear and direct about her needs and expectations. I watched the video several times to ensure I accurately captured her insights on the discovery map. Each interview offered a unique perspective, providing a rich variety of insights from different roles within the industry. It was a valuable experience to hear from two distinct positions and work on translating their feedback into actionable improvements.
